I'm kind of tired right now... probably not the best time to be writing an update (on my parents' computer to boot, which means no auto spellcheck).

I don't know how many of your heard about the huge storm here in the Northwest recently. My family was without power for the better part of the evening. Trees all over town have been uprooted. Roads were flooded. Transformers were blowing on power poles every few seconds. We lost count within minutes of the blue flashes on the horizon and elsewhere. Driving past the university, one exploded to my right, darkening the intersection at which we'd stopped. Half of the town was black. Even Taco Bell was forced to close before 10pm.

Power lines waved in the wind like broken strands of cobwebs and caused several more streets to be inaccessable.

It was really cool.

I know, though, that three unfortunate people north of Oregon lost their lives in this storm, so it is certainly not funny. I live in awe of the incredible power of the natural world, and throughout the storm I was oddly comforted by what I felt was my heightened ability to sense the immensity of the world beneath me.

This has never made me feel small (I have never managed to feel what many describe as insignificance when facing the vastness of the universe). I have the same number of atoms as I always have, and my size does not change. In point of fact, it fills me with a sense of reverence and admiration for the universe which gave rise to my being.

Storms like this remind me of that, and reaffirm my connection with the world around me. The universe that gave me life can just as easily snuff it out. The beauty is that it gave me life at all.
